A Maze in Tchaiovna is much more than a teahouse. Though they do serve a huge variety of lovingly brewed teas from around the world (many of them organic), they also also organize educational “tea talks”, concerts, clothing swaps, book readings, theater shows and other events, offer a free library, and famously allow guests to get lost in a secret maze of hidden rooms. A bonus for some: they also serve beer and much sought-after “a-mazing toastie” sandwiches in both vegan and vegetarian varieties. Known as a popular expat hangout, co-owners Helen and Andy (himself half Czech, half English) nevertheless make concerted efforts to integrate into the Czech community, including bilingual improv comedy evenings by group Blood Love & Rhetoric. They also organize larger events including Meander festival, taking place in Loket every June and Roztoč Fest.
“We want to support anything positive and to do something to promote decency… We were feeling powerless and realized that guns don’t work but you can try to help by enfranchising people through positivity and education.” – Andy, co-owner and co-founder of A Maze in Tchaiovna
